metaphors
teach me how to feel
Someone once asked me to help them read with feeling, to understand metaphors, to understand poetry. What could I do? How could I do that?
Best I could do was write this poem.
—
teach me how to read with feeling
teach me how to feel
teach me how to think in metaphors
engage with metaphors
cradle me in metaphors
help me express the feeling
I feel when you stroke my hair
and kiss my forehead
reach into my chest
and take the temperature
of my heart, hold it, unite
with its rhythm, tell me
I’m beautiful, but do it with
metaphors, say to me,
you are more compelling
than a basketful of puppies,
you are a perfect cool breeze
on my sunburned face, you are
my weird wormy roots, holding
me up, growing me out, nourishing
my expansion;
look into me, ask me, how do you feel,
what do you dream, what do you scheme;
help me be me
deeply, with curiosity, with love, with
absolute awe and fascination for my
entirety, remind me that I come from
stardust, broken light, shards of
broken light spun into skin and bone
and blood and metaphors and sunshine
feelings, rainy mornings, rainbow afternoons
fiery evenings iced with dreamy nights,
intertwining and blooming
moon flowers
